Industry News (Apple Insider):

There have been 3 billion downloads of App Store applications designed specifically for Apple’s iPad, representing 19 percent of all iOS App Store downloads, a new study has found.

ABI Research announced in a press release on Wednesday that it has estimated 3 billion applications have been cumulatively downloaded since the iPad first launched in 2010. The iPad represents nearly a fifth of all cumulative iOS downloads, despite the fact that it debuted nearly three years after the iPhone, and two years after the iOS App Store opened.

Apple isn’t scheduled to report its holiday quarterly sales until January 24, but Verizon Wireless has just noted that it has sold 4.2 million iPhones in the last three months of 2011, double its previous quarterly figure.

The growth of iPad-specific applications and downloads of iPad software is comparable to the explosive start the iPhone had when the App Store first opened. Apple announced that iPhone and iPod touch application downloads had topped 3 billion in early January of 2010, or less than 18 months after the App Store opened.

The week between Christmas and New Year’s saw record iOS and Android app downloads of 1.2 billion, while the two platforms saw a total of 20 million device activations during the so-called “power week,” making it their largest week ever, according to a new analysis.

Mobile analytics firm Flurry detailed the holiday week figures in a report on Monday. The data reflects a continued trend where app makers see their biggest sales surge in the week following Christmas, rather than during the usual pre-Christmas shopping season.

According to the report, combined iOS and Android new app downloads from December 25-31 topped 1.2 billion, representing 60 percent growth over the weekly average from the first two weeks in December. 242 million application downloads came on Christmas Day alone. By comparison, the week before Christmas saw 857 million downloads, driven largely by a boost in downloads on Dec. 24.

The U.S. held a large lead over other countries in terms of total app downloads during the holiday week, consistent with the firm’s earlier estimates that the American installed base is the world’s largest with 109 million. The report claimed the U.S. saw 509 million application downloads, or 42.3 percent, last week.

China, which has grown to become the second-largest app market, came in second in terms of app downloads during the period with a total of 99 million. The U.K. came in third with 81 million downloads, followed by Canada, Germany and France.

The Company is proud to announce App Revenue and Downloads for the first two days of this week after Christmas 2011, are up on average of 50% compared to the week before.  Overall App Revenue is up 20% this last two weeks as compared to the two weeks before. Month over Month revenue is up 14%.  Similar to last year, App revenue really ramps up after Christmas and we expect January to be the best month for sales.  The first two days of sales this week were the best Monday and Tuesday for sales in over six months.

Today we added another 9 Android apps making our current total 81. This weekend we expect to start uploading our new Android Movie apps with brand new un-released content. Android still accounts for less than 10% of our daily revenue, but December 25th was a record Android sales day, 100%+ higher than the same day a week before.  We exepect Android revenue will be comprable to Apple revenue as we start to get similar numbers of apps uploaded, our goal being 1500+ Android apps, which is about what we have for sale now on iTunes.

Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android together have reached close to 55 percent market penetration of the estimated 200 million potential smart device purchasers in the U.S., while the two platforms have the most room to grow in China, which has 122 million untapped potential users, according to a new analysis.

iOS, Android activations surge 353% on record setting Christmas Day.

Christmas Day saw a massive jump in activations of iOS and Android devices, and represented a 353 percent growth in daily activations when compared to the previous 20 days of December. The 6.8 million Christmas activations set a new one-day record, shattering last year’s best day by over 140 percent.

In the first 20 days of December, mobile device activations tracked by analytics firm Flurry were around 1.5 million each day. But on Dec. 25, it identified 6.8 million new iOS and Android activations, representing 353 percent growth.

iPhone app downloads in the U.S. during November saw an 83 percent rise from a year ago, while the aggregate volume of the Top 200 ranked free apps for Apple’s handset grew to 5.65 million downloads per day.

In a report released on Wednesday, mobile app marketing research firm Fiksu found that the launch of the iPhone 4S greatly impacted the volume of downloaded apps, boosting year-to-year numbers in November by 83 percent.

The firm says the uptick was expected as device launches bring high interest from new owners, noting that their “appetite for app discovery and engagement is strong.”

There were 150M apps for mobile devices downloaded on Christmas Eve, and 242M apps downloaded on Christmas, according to mobile analytics firm Flurry, The New York Times reported. Christmas Day downloads of apps for Apple (AAPL) and Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system more than doubled compared with prior years and set records, Flurry added, the newspaper said.

Mr. Collingwood signed an App development deal with Metatron/i-Mobilize and his first 8 apps are scheduled to be released on Android Marketplace this week, eventually releasing his entire current catalog of 76 apps. Rick will be appearing on Coast to Coast on Christmas eve and the show will be replayed a number of times.

Sunday, December 18th was the best sales day for apps in over six months, and record sales day for Android apps.  The increased revenues are due to more apps being released on multiple platforms and traditionally strong Holiday season. Sunday sales were 14% higher than the previous top sales day last Wednesday. Overall revenue is up 21% for the last month compared to the month before.  Friday December 16th was also an all-time record day for subscription app sales, with a 46% month over month growth rate on those particular apps.  Android apps sales are also 100%+ higher this week than the week before.

11 iPhone/iPad apps were approved over the weekend and will appear in the “New” Section of their respective categories. 8 Android apps were released also, with another 10 or so coming out today or Tuesday.  Our goal is to eventually have 1500+ apps on Android like we do now on iTunes.

We will be releasing the back catalog of our top selling client Glenn Harrold on Android in the next few weeks, adding to his already impressive list of top selling apps.  In general we will be releasing our top sellers and brand new content on Android, including movies and audiobooks not available on Apple devices yet.  So far our Android apps are being rated about 4.5 out of five stars in the Android Marketplace.

We now have 24 Android apps on Android Marketplace for sale with another 8 or so to appear later today or tomorrow. Our goal is to eventually have 1500+ Android apps for sale like we do now on iTunes. Another 10 Universal iPhone/iPad app updates were approved today and will soon appear in the “New” category on iTunes, providing a revenue boost for those apps.

Overall revenue is up 21% month over month, and app updates are up over 125% for the same time period. 17 out of i-mobilize’s 380+ i-Pad Paid apps are in the United States Top 200 grossing titles in their respective categories.

Development for both the “Netflix” app and the Eckhart Tolle Tv subscription app is well underway and both should be out soon, although we can’t give an exact release date yet.  The back-end software and feature set for both apps is similar, which will help speed up development.

An Alphawise survey of American purchasing intentions indicates that US iPhone and iPad demand are stronger than expected; sales will continue to outperform expectations into 2012 and should enable Apple to beat estimates next year.

Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, who has historically been rather conservative in her predictions of Apple’s performance, issued a new report yesterday (via Fortune) suggesting that Apple could sell nearly 200 million iPhones next year. The number would be more than double that of this year’s iPhone sales, which currently stand at 56 million ahead of a blockbuster quarter that is expected to add perhaps 30-35 million to that number.

- iPhones are selling surprisingly briskly. Based on the survey and last week’s comments from AT&T (T), Huberty estimates that Apple (AAPL) could ship anywhere from 31 to 36 million iPhones this quarter — as much as 20% higher than the 30 million she’s modeling and nearly 30% higher than the 28 million Wall Street is expecting.

- iPhone demand is accelerating. “Surprisingly,” she writes, “US consumers expect to buy more iPhones in C1Q12 than C4Q11″ (emphasis hers). Even discounting the survey results 10%, that suggests Apple could sell 13 million iPhones in the U.S. and 41 million worldwide next quarter. Morgan Stanley’s model has Apple selling 30 million iPhones in calendar Q1 2012.

Huberty’s predictions are based on her own research and a consumer survey by AlphaWise that pegs demand for the iPhone next year 40% higher than anticipated by Morgan Stanley in its “base case” scenario.

Apple has approved 43 more Universal iPhone/iPad app updates today which will appear in the “new” category on iTunes soon, some will be iPad apps for the first time. Our Android app installs are up 300%+ week over week, but still less than 10% of our overall app downloads on all platforms.

More Android operating systems are being activated daily 550,000 versus 450,000 daily for Apple’s iOS, as of last count.

Google announced last week that worldwide Android Market app downloads now exceed one billion per month.  Compared to iOS, which surpassed 18 billion total downloads in October, Google revealed that the Android Market recently surpassed 10 billion total downloads.  This comes on the heels of comScore’s latest MobiLens report, showing that, for the three months ending in October, Android devices now account for 46.3% of U.S. smartphone subscribers versus 28.1% for Apple.  By these accounts, Google Android has momentum.  Mr. Schmidt further predicted at Le Web that, within six months time, Android would become the first platform for which developers build.

Android ecosystem challenges have been widely publicized, from OS fragmentation to concerns about the impact of not curating the Android Market.  However, the largest single factor that appears to impact developer support for the platform is the consumer’s ability to pay.  This comes down to Google Checkout penetration.  Upon setting up an iOS device, a consumer must associate either a credit or gift card to her iTunes account.  In theory, this means that 100% of all iOS device users are payment enabled.  This has not been the case for Android, resulting in lower revenue generation possibilities on the platform.  With the recent integration of Google Wallet and Google Checkout, as well as their current $0.10 Android app sale to spur new account sign-ups, Google appears to be taking steps to correct this.

The Android platform presents unique challenges, hundreds of devices to make apps compatible with, multiple OS versions ect.. but there is no review process, so we expect the release rate of Apps to be significantly faster than with Apple. Our goal is to eventually have thousands of Android apps for sale, like we do now for Apple on iTunes.

Since the beginning of December we have had over 10 new iPhone/iPad apps released, mostly due to converting exiting apps into Universal platform. Over 30 more Apps were approved by Apple today and will be showing up on iTunes within the next few hours.

Revenue continues to trend upward with a 12% increase month over month as of yesterday.
